To understand Dickens, you have to understand his relationship with the city’s streets. He was a compulsive night-walker, a man who would regularly clear out of his house at midnight and march fifteen to twenty miles in a single stretch, soaking up the soot, the gossip, and the grit of the Victorian capital.

 

For him, London wasn't just a background setting; it was a living, breathing, sometimes terrifying character. And the pubs along this route? They were the stage doors where that character came to life.

In the mid-1800s, the tavern was the absolute center of human existence. It was where the overworked legal clerk escaped his drafty office, where journalists—the self-proclaimed "men of the ink"—traded scandals, and where the poorest residents found a momentary refuge of warmth by a coal fire.

This walk will take you directly through the layers of that bygone era—from the high-society opulence of grand, gilded dining rooms to the squalid, forgotten slums that Dickens passionately exposed in his writing. You’ll trace his footsteps from his early days as a hungry young reporter writing under the pen name "Boz," through to his years of worldwide fame as "The Inimitable."
